Square jaw: Shape, Attractiveness and What Can Change
Find out what a square jaw is, how bone and masseter muscles affect its shape, and what can make it look more defined or softer.
A square jaw is a broad lower-jaw outline with noticeable corners rather than a strongly tapered shape. Bone, chewing-muscle size and the fat over them shape that outline; styling can change how it looks, but does not reshape adult jawbone.
This guide is for adults 18+. You might want sharper corners, a softer outline, or simply a name for your shape. Start with that preference: a square jaw is not something you have to get or get rid of.

Fictional illustration, not a patient or a treatment result.
What is a square jaw, and is an angular jaw the same thing?
“Square” usually describes width across the lower face and visible corners below the ears. “Angular” emphasizes the corners themselves. A jaw can look angular from the side without the whole face looking broad from the front.
Those views involve different measurements. Bigonial width is the width across the jaw angles; bizygomatic width is the width across the cheekbones. The gonial angle describes the jaw's angle in the side view. A clinical study distinguishes frontal width from lateral angularity and notes that no definitive width ratio establishes a square face. Anatomy and measurement.
You do not need to draw a perfect square over your face or find a particular angle. These are useful descriptions, not a pass/fail test.
A chin that sits back in profile is a separate concern from jaw width. If that is what you mean by a “weak jaw,” use the chin guide rather than trying to make the lower face wider.
Do I have a square jaw or a square face?
A square jaw describes the lower face. A square face shape also considers length, forehead width and chin taper. A broad jaw on a longer face can fit an oblong or rectangular styling description instead.
Use one relaxed front photo to separate those questions:
- Face an eye-level camera straight on. Use a timer or helper and avoid an extreme close selfie.
- Keep your head level and mouth gently closed. Do not clench, jut your jaw or lift your chin for definition.
- Use even light, no beauty filter and hair clear of the outline. Note if a beard hides the jaw corners.
- Look at length and taper together. Ask whether the jaw is broad relative to the cheeks, whether the chin tapers, and whether the whole face looks long.
The free face shape detector compares frontal measurements with six styling templates: oval, round, square, heart, diamond and oblong. Here is its actual square-versus-oval comparison:
| Frontal measurement | Square template | Oval template |
|---|---|---|
| Upper-forehead-to-chin length ÷ cheek width | 1.10 | 1.20 |
| Forehead width ÷ cheek width | 95% | 93% |
| Jaw width ÷ cheek width | 85% | 78% |
| Chin width ÷ jaw width | 75% | 69% |
These are rounded LooksLab template centers, not ideal proportions, population averages or medical cutoffs. Notice that chin width uses jaw width as its denominator. Face length starts at the upper forehead, not the hairline.
For example, a jaw measurement near the square template does not settle the label if the other measurements fit differently. Check the runner-up: Clear, Leans and Blend describe relative template fit. A blend gives you two sets of styling ideas, not a diagnosis to resolve.
The detector cannot measure your side-view jaw angle, chin projection, bite or masseter thickness, or tell bone from muscle. Results are app estimates from one photo. Measurement happens in your browser; your photo is not sent to a server for analysis. Optional public result-card sharing is a separate choice.
Is a square jaw attractive on men and women?
It can be. A square jaw is not a requirement for an attractive male face, and it does not disqualify a woman from looking feminine or attractive.
Research helps separate three ideas that often get mixed together:
- Average sex differences: larger jawbones are among the features that differ between adult male and female faces on average. That does not classify an individual face.
- Male attractiveness: a review found mixed preferences for facial masculinity. Some studies favored more masculine male faces; others favored more feminine versions.
- Female attractiveness: the same review found a more consistent preference for feminine female faces. Those studies judged whole faces, and composite studies changed several features at once, so they do not isolate the jaw or describe any one woman's face.
Those findings do not establish an ideal jaw width or tell you that narrowing one person's jaw would improve their appearance. Facial-attractiveness review.
If you want broader proportion context, the attractiveness test shows frontal measurements and its formula. It does not measure female femininity, skin or facial fat, and it has not been validated against human attractiveness ratings. Use it to understand its measurements, not to decide whether your jaw deserves changing.
Is my wide jaw bone, masseter muscle or face fat?
A photo cannot reliably separate them. Bone, muscle and covering tissue can contribute together. Use the table to choose a better question, not to select a treatment.
| What you notice | What might contribute | Useful next step | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad corners in comparable relaxed photos | Bone, muscle or covering tissue | Note whether the width is at the jaw corners or cheeks | That bone reduction is needed |
| A rear-jaw bulge during chewing, or frequent clenching | Masseter activity or enlargement | Describe any symptoms to a dentist; ask whether the muscle is enlarged | That clenching caused the width or Botox would suit you |
| A less visible jaw edge alongside facial fullness | Soft tissue over the underlying frame | Separate fullness from the width of the corners | Your body-fat percentage or a need to lose weight |
| Different corners after a beard trim | Hair framing the lower face | Compare the same light, distance and pose | Bone or muscle change |
| Different width in close or tilted selfies | Camera setup and pose | Retake one level, relaxed front photo | A structural change or clinical asymmetry |
The anatomy rows follow the jaw study and masseter review; the grooming and capture rows are practical observation suggestions.
Masseter enlargement is one possibility. Repeated clenching, bruxism and excessive chewing are reported contributors, but the cause is not always clear. A wide jaw alone does not establish any of them. Masseter evidence. Do not repeatedly clench to test or train the area.
Fullness is a different question. Research links facial adiposity with overall body mass and lower-face outline. That does not mean every broad jaw is fat, or that weight loss will produce square corners. Facial-adiposity review. Our guide to face fat, puffiness and structure helps separate those concerns.
How can men (or anyone) get a more defined square jaw?
First decide whether you want more width or a clearer outline. “Square” describes shape; “defined” describes how visible its edges look. Making the lower face broader is not automatically the change you want.
If you grow facial hair, try stubble or a short boxed beard with tidy edges to emphasize the existing corners. For less emphasis, try rounder beard corners instead. These are barber conventions, not clinical treatments or guaranteed improvements; our beard styles for a square face guide explains both directions.
Compare one grooming change using the same photo setup. Write a specific goal, such as “I want the beard edge to look cleaner,” rather than “I need a different jaw.” You can judge the first without turning it into a bone question.
If overall body composition changes, facial fullness may change too, but that does not change bony jaw width or guarantee more definition. Facial-adiposity evidence. Do not make weight loss your default response to a soft jaw, especially if you are already lean.
For added contour, filler and implants are medical options with different risks, covered below. They are not the next required step after grooming.
Square jaw in women: how can I soften it if I want to?
Start with the part you want to soften: the hair framing your face, the visible corners, or actual lower-face width. You can also keep a square jaw exactly as it is.

Fictional illustration of a square jaw on a woman, not a before-and-after result.
For a styling experiment, try soft layers around the face rather than a blunt line ending at the jaw. If you use makeup, compare a softly blended contour with your usual look instead of drawing a hard new jaw edge. These are optional styling suggestions; they change presentation, not bone or muscle. The hair and makeup guide for women gives broader ideas.
If you mean less physical width, ask which tissue contributes before discussing treatment. Masseter Botox can reduce chewing-muscle bulk when the muscle is enlarged. Its target is muscle; it does not remove a broad bony angle. A clinician must assess whether muscle is the relevant tissue. Masseter-treatment review.
Bring your own preference to that conversation. “I like my angular jaw and want to keep it” is as useful as “I want less width.”
What can Botox, filler, implants and jaw surgery change?
These are options to understand, not recommendations to get a procedure. Their targets differ, so they cannot be treated as interchangeable ways to achieve the same jaw.
| Option | What it changes | Timing and permanence | Recovery or main risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hair, beard or makeup styling | Visible framing only | Effect while the style is maintained | Does not change bone or muscle; a styling experiment |
| Masseter botulinum toxin, often called Botox | Reduces enlarged muscle bulk | Lower-face studies report onset over about 2–4 weeks; not an instant finished contour. Effects often last around 3–4 months, with longer contour effects in some studies | Chewing weakness, smile changes/asymmetry, hollowing, sagging or paradoxical bulging. US cosmetic masseter use is off-label. Some studies report reduced jawbone cortical thickness after injections; long-term significance is unclear. |
| Jawline filler | Adds volume and definition along the jaw edge | Immediate effect in the ASPS-described approach; about 12–18 months depending on material | Swelling/bruising, infection, lumps and asymmetry; accidental vascular injection can cause tissue or visual loss |
| Jaw implants | Add lower-face width | Long-term implant; surgery and healing before judging the result | Infection, shifting, altered sensation, temporary or permanent nerve damage, possible revision |
| Mandibular angle reduction | Removes or recontours jawbone | Lasting structural change; swelling delays assessment | Surgical recovery; bleeding, infection, asymmetry, fracture and nerve injury |

Is masseter Botox approved for jaw slimming?
Cosmetic masseter slimming is off-label in the US: it is absent from the BOTOX Cosmetic label's approved uses. Its approval for neck platysma bands does not cover masseter reduction. A 2023 review notes lower-face slimming with botulinum toxin “is not officially approved for this indication in any country.” Separately from the local effects in the table, the label carries a boxed warning about distant toxin spread, including potentially life-threatening swallowing or breathing difficulties. US prescribing information.
Can bone shaving be reversed?
Treat angle reduction as a lasting bone change, not a temporary trial. It removes or reshapes bone and carries surgical risks; do not plan around being able to undo it. Jaw-contouring review.
For assessment, see a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for injections, or a board-certified plastic or oral and maxillofacial surgeon for implants or bone surgery. Ask which tissue would change, what would remain, and what recovery and complications apply to the specific procedure. Returning to work and seeing the settled contour are separate questions; there is no single recovery deadline for this entire table.
Do mewing, gum or jaw exercises build a square jaw?
Mewing does not reshape adult jaw bone. Cleveland Clinic explains that the tongue exercise lacks the strength and specificity to significantly change facial features. Mewing evidence.
In a randomized trial of 58 participants over six months, gum training increased bite force without a significant change in masseter thickness or mandibular shape. Stronger biting did not mean a squarer jaw in that trial. Trial abstract.
Do not use chewing gum, mastic gum, jaw exercisers, jaw exercises or bone smashing to build a square jaw. Our gum-chewing evidence review covers the research in more detail.
What should I do next about my jaw?
Choose one next step: use the frontal self-check to understand your outline, try one styling change, or keep the shape you already like.
If you have persistent jaw pain, frequent clenching, a bite/function change or new one-sided swelling, ask a dentist or clinician for assessment rather than treating it as a face-shape problem. Muscle enlargement requires clinical assessment, not a selfie diagnosis. Masseter assessment.
